Music streaming service Spotify is looking to expand its horizons with hefty new updates, as the company unveiled the newest version of its platform at a media event in New York. The update will introduce new content types to users, including podcasts and videos from media partners, as well as increasingly personalized music playlists.
These playlists will recommended content determined by a variety of factors, including the tracks users have previously listened to, or the time of day, as examples.
In addition, Spotify announced its new Spotify Running feature, which will use the sensors in users’ phones to detect the pace of their runs. When activated, the app will select the right music to play, based on this pace. These playlists will still focus on users’ tastes, based on their previous listening habits, and they will include original running compositions written by leading DJs and composers.
Aside from music, Spotify is adding new kinds of content to its platform, including video clips and podcasts. The company has already partnered with major media companies including NBC, BBC, ABC, Comedy Central, Maker Studios, Vice Media and many others, with more coming. Like music, Spotify will suggest new video and audio content for users to experience, becoming smarter over time.
In a statement, Daniel Ek, founder and CEO of Spotify, commented on the updates:
We’re bringing you a deeper, richer, more immersive Spotify experience. We want Spotify to help soundtrack your life by offering an even wider world of entertainment with an awesome mix of the best music, podcasts and video delivered to you throughout your day. And we’re just getting started.
The new Spotify experience will begin rolling out to iPhone users in the U.S., U.K., Germany and Sweden Wednesday. Spotify Running will also be integrated with the Nike+ app and RunKeeper later this year.
