Re-Create Iconic Photographs for Instagram Contest

Have you ever wanted to create your own take of a classic photograph? If you do a good enough job, the Iconic Photo Contest from Instagram may be for you.

The contest runs through June 12, and 10 finalists will be announced June 17, with their photographs being displayed in the Instagram Gallery at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity June 21 through 27. And the three prize winners will receive limited-edition Leica X cameras.

The Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing network said in an Instagram for Business blog post announcing the contest:

Robert Doisneau’s kiss by the Hôtel de Ville. Dorthea Lange’s image of a mother with her children during the Great Depression. Annie Leibovitz’s portrait of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. These iconic images of moments past have become part of our collective memory thanks to the power of photography.

To enter, simply tag your original photo with #RecreatedClassic and #InstagramCannes2015, describe which iconic photo of the past you’re recreating and you’ll be automatically entered to win.

Instagram also offered the following tips for entrants:

  • Photos can be taken with your phone or a camera.
  • Reinvent classic photos with your own unique creativity using new colors, approaches, developing techniques or filters.
  • Replace iconic subjects with new or unexpected subjects.
