81% of Shoppers Conduct Online Research Before Buying [Infographic]

‘Tis the season for online shopping. With Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals starting even earlier, shoppers are taking to the Internet to do their research and to find the best deals. But what sort of things stop shoppers from making purchases? An infographic compiled by MineWhat.com provides insight into what motivates online shoppers.

Eighty-one percent of shoppers conduct online research before they make a purchase. Sixty percent begin by using a search engine to find the products they want, and 61 percent will read product reviews before making any purchase. On average, a consumer will visit three stores before making their purchase.

There are a variety of reasons behind why users choose not to make a purchase at an online store. Sixty-nine percent avoid purchasing because they believe returning a product would be a complicated process. Sixty-one percent of shoppers would leave a website if it didn’t have free shipping, and 51 percent would abandon a purchase if shipping options weren’t fast enough. Six in 10 consumers said they were concerned about credit-card fraud.

10 Marketing Tools To Be Thankful For

Marketing is evolving in many exciting ways. It’s challenging to navigate the changing implications of digital and data, but these changes also have ushered in a variety of strategic and tactical measures to improve efficiency.

To mark the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday this week, we’ve revisited previous posts to pay homage to the tools that keep us marketers aligned, integrated, and centered on our customers.

Here’s our ‘Ode to Integrated Marketing’, a cornucopia of 10 marketing tools we’re thankful for:

1. Customer Community Networks- Forums that connect you to your core audiences are multi-faceted awesome. Thanks to our Topliners community, we’re able to keep in close touch with our customers, engage in conversations that help us understand their needs, as well as how we can enhance what we do to serve them better.

2. Collaborative environments- Truly integrated marketing hinges on the ability to stay aligned with our teams, sync up efforts, and share best practices to keep the right processes in motion. So we salute tools like instant messenger/chat, webinar hosting platforms, and live video tools that enable us to connect with customers, and the key players to keep business in motion across the globe.

3. Visual creation tools- Content increasingly drives our marketing communications, so tools that allow us to build out infographics for presentations help deliver a better demo experience, and can serve other educational purposes to better engage with our audiences.

4. Recording applications- The massive outpouring of media impressions, social postings, phone calls, emails, chats, and links we consume every day can be overwhelming. There is so much important information to sift through, and apps that help record audio, video, and/or notes enable us to store and manage the consumption and delivery of content.

5. Data applications- Smart, helpful marketing starts with the right data set, properly organized and prioritized for the marketer. Earlier this year we announced our acquisition of BlueKai to help our customers build the richest user profiles combining information from first party and third party sources. Getting the message right across advertising, social, and mobile channels is a communication imperative.

6. GPS Enabled devices- Once relegated to the phantom ‘wish list’ for marketers, it’s great to now have the opportunity to know what’s up, who’s nearby, and how you can capitalize on the location of your audiences to deliver value.

7. Keyword Management- SEO and PPC strategies are critical to smart online marketing. Google’s Keyword Planner enables marketers to examine keywords for both SEO and PPC efforts to develop the appropriate strategies.

8. Content management systems- This past year our organization has been focused on integrating content marketing management into our product ecosystem since the acquisition of Compendium. CMS platforms support marketers’ ability to collaboratively manage content being shared across various channels, and organize performance data for more efficient analysis.

9. Design software- Because content is so important, the creative team/agency also has become an integral part of the marketing team. Whether you’re outsourcing your content creation, making the magic happen in-house, and/or a hybrid of both, design software is a core component in delivering engaging marketing content.

10. The Cloud- Big things are happening thanks to cloud-based technologies. The Cloud enables us to build a customer-obsessed marketing culture by truly knowing the customer, deploying always-on multichannel marketing, and enabling data driven accountability.

Most of all, we’re thankful for the vibrant community of modern marketers who we learn from every day!

Tell us what you’re most thankful for in the comments!

Twitter to begin tracking which apps you download

Twitter-2
Feed-twFeed-fb

Twitter will soon start keeping tabs on the apps you download

An app update, slated to roll out to iOS users Wednesday and Android users in the next week, will add a setting that allows the social network to keep track of the apps you download, the company announced Wednesday.

The goal, Twitter says, is to provide users with a "more tailored experience." By tracking the apps people are downloading, the company can better gauge users' interests and surface better suggestions of new accounts to follow and, most importantly, more relevant ads.

The feature, which Twitter is calling "app graph," will also be used to personalize the content that appears in users' timeline from accounts they don't follow. The social network confirmed in August users would begin seeing tweets and favorites from accounts they don't follow in their timeline. It wasn't clear at the time exactly how Twitter planned to make those changes but the company says app graph will help inform those additions. Read more...

Which Retailers Have the Most Social Influence?

social influence

Klout has long fancied itself the definitive measure of social media influence. While in more recent years, the validity and value of the Klout score has been called into question, the company continues trying to prove naysayers wrong.

To wit, Klout and parent company announced the inaugural Klout 50 in October. The report used Interbrand 100 data to determine which brands are most influential on social media. This week, Klout analyzed social data from the National Retail Federation Top 100 to determine which retailers have the most social influence.

Amazon, which topped the sister list, also ranked as the top retailer with a Klout score of 98.84. Target came in second, followed by Wal-Mart, AT&T Wireless and Dell — which is #5 on the Klout 50, but #91 on the NRF list. Neiman Marcus also showed higher on the Klout list (#9) than it did on the NRF list (#86).

According to the report, a common theme among the Klout 50 is that they use “social in every part of the customer journey to help with purchasing decisions.”

“It’s time for retailers to wake up. Customers expect instant customer service, personalized offers and perks no matter where they are. Social provides the perfect platform to deliver on these customer expectations. It’s a human touch at scale,” Katy Keim, CMO of Lithium Technologies, said in a statement.

Eventbrite - Mashable Media Summit: Formats of Creativity

Q: How has digital impacted storytelling for you?
A: Larry: I loved to work in print in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. I had an internal mission to help people tell stories and an external love for the personal story. I was always the guy deeply involved in tech culture. I edited Tom Wolfe’s personal stories. Sometimes I edited essays for unknown writers. Sometimes I wrote my own – it’s just what moved me the most. It wouldn’t have been possible to do this without digital. Digital means everyone has simple tools to tell stories. LinkedIn Most Popular Platform for Adults

    linkedin
MediaPost reported this week that LinkedIn is the social network for grown-ups. Based on a survey of advertising executives’ and Association of National Advertiser members’ own social media habits, they self-reported active engagement across platforms. However, the professional social network was the most trafficked during the workday. They write:

While Facebook and LinkedIn tied in terms of the share (92 percent) of ANA members using them personally, they were far more connected with others via LinkedIn (an average of 507 connections) vs. Facebook (an average of 385 friends)… While the ANA members are more connected via LinkedIn, far more described Facebook as being their “favorite” social network. Forty-five percent of the ad execs described Facebook as their favorite, followed by 19 percent for LinkedIn, 16 percent for Instagram, 12 percent for Twitter, and 6 percent for Pinterest.

They aren’t just perusing jobs, either. Respondents said they are “actively blogging” and posting content on the platform on a regular basis. The advertising execs know what they’re doing: They’re the ones pushing initiatives for other demographics to use platforms. The ANA survey showed that they were “voracious” users of social media and early adopters, testing out Snapchat and Vine more than “average Americans.” The survey also revealed Instagram to be an insider favorite as well:

The most important finding in this research regarding Instagram is that it is the favorite personal social media channel of millennials (meanwhile, Facebook is identified as the favorite by Gen X and Boomers). Seventy percent of millennial ANA members are on Instagram, versus 52 percent for Gen X, and just 27 percent for Boomers. Instagram is to millennials what Facebook is to Gen X and Boomers. Instagram is less time-intensive and relies more on visual imagery than text.

    The Great Grape Salad Debate

grape salad1The New York Times created an interactive, state-by-state map of the most Googled Thanksgiving recipes. Good idea, until residents started to chime in. Key lime cake in Georgia? Who ever heard of such a thing? Here were some more response from around the web:

So this NYT Thanksgiving Recipe thing further pushes the stereotype that NJ is only made up of Italians? http://t.co/gwaLnQUe1H

Only small gripe: the NYT Thanksgiving recipe for Kansas isn’t bad enough. — Alex Heard (@alexheard) November 19, 2014

Nothing says DC like a tart prepared by a NY chef and served to an elected official at a state dinner. Very NYT. http://t.co/thupGzLhjQ — Jack Kogod (@Unsilent) November 19, 2014

NYT says English pea and onion salad represents Ohio at Thanksgiving. Born here, raised here, no pea/onion salad. http://t.co/6HRFwu2YJf — Taylor Dungjen (@taylordungjen) November 19, 2014

But no state had as many gripes as Minnesota. It’s turned into #grapegate and NPR even did a segment on it:

Re: MN feeling wronged by grape salad via the NYT, Iowa is also pretty pissed because there is *no such thing* as Thanksgiving cookies.

What kind of Minnesotan googles wild rice “casserole”? Sweet baby Jesus in a corn crib, people, it’s “hot dish.” #grapegate #GopherPoseurs
