Facebook Groups: Facebook’s Newest Stand-Alone App (AllFacebook)
Co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has gone out of his way to mention Facebook’s Groups feature during the company’s earnings calls for the third quarter of 2014 and fourth quarter of 2013, hinting during the latter that a standalone application might be forthcoming. Forthcoming is now here, as the social network announced the launch of its Facebook Groups app in a Newsroom post Tuesday, saying that the app is available in all countries, for iOS and Android. Business Insider The Facebook Groups app allows you to more easily share, chat, and generally keep up with Facebook groups on the go. You can manage memberships, toggle between groups, join new groups, and view notifications all within the app. TechCrunch “No one is really doing this out there. We think what we offer is unique,” said the Groups app’s project manager, Shirley Sun. Despite Yahoo and Google fiercely competing to dominate group email lists, there’s a surprising lack of people and rich content-focused social feed groups services, and Facebook is happy to capitalize. The Wall Street Journal/Digits Facebook says 700 million people use the Groups feature monthly on mobile and desktop – slightly more than half of Facebook’s users. Groups is more popular outside the U.S., and it is growing fastest in Brazil and Indonesia, where internet usage is moving away from desktop and into mobile. Facebook’s Meghan Peters wrote about the new page: “Today we’re introducing FB Techwire, a resource for journalists to discover original content including breaking news, first-person analysis, photos and videos posted to Facebook by technology influencers and organizations.”
