Sierra, a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, has announced the launch of Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions on iOS devices. Developed by Lucid Games, the game challenges players to complete levels by tapping and holding on the screen to direct their ship and destroy enemies.
In each level, players use a virtual joystick on the left side of the screen to move their ship around the playing field. The ship will automatically aim and fire at nearby enemies, or players can manually aim by using another virtual joystick on the right side of the screen.
In Adventure mode, each of the 50 levels has an overall goal, like reaching a large number of points before running out of time or lives. Boss levels are also available. As players defeat enemies, they collect green \"geoms,\" increasing their score multiplier. The ship’s weapons will upgrade while playing, and gamers can use a limited supply of bombs to clear the screen when things become too hectic.
Players earn up to three stars on each stage, depending on their performance. For social play, gamers can connect to Facebook to compare their scores with their friends’ on each level. Users can replay stages to increase their high scores.
As players collect stars, they’ll unlock super abilities, which can be upgraded using the currency players earn while playing, increasing their effectiveness. One may cover the playing field in mines, for instance, while another triggers a black hole to suck enemies in, and so on.
In addition, as players complete boss stages, they’ll unlock drones, each with a different purpose (attacking, defending, etc.). These drones can also be upgraded. In total, there are five different drones and five different super abilities to unlock, and players must choose one of each to activate for each stage.
Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions was originally released on consoles and PC in 2014, with this mobile version containing two iOS exclusive stages. The game also offers five classic modes inspired by past games in the franchise: Deadline, King, Evolved, Pacifism and Waves.
Each mode has its own setup and goal, from earning as many points as possible in a single life, to defeating enemies by flying through gates, rather than using weapons. In addition to one-touch controls, the game supports iOS controllers.
Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is available to download for $4.99 on the iTunes App Store. The game does not contain in-app purchases.
