Gameloft and Fox Digital Entertainment have announced the release of Ice Age Avalanche, a twist on the traditional match-three genre, set in the world of the popular Ice Age films. The latest installment in the mobile Ice Age franchise (following Ice Age Village and Ice Age Adventures) sees players helping Granny recover the treasures she misplaced in her youth.
Ice Age Avalanche offers level-based missions, each with a different goal. Stockpile stages, for instance, ask players to earn a large number of points in a limited number of moves, while Acorn Avalanche levels ask users to move acorns to the bottom of the screen for collection, and so on.
Turn-based boss battles are also available, challenging players to take over squares before the boss can do the same. Players claim squares by making matches on top of them, but these can be stolen by the boss (and vice versa).
In addition to these single-player activities, Ice Age Avalanche offers real-time head-to-head multiplayer, with matches resembling boss battles. Finally, the game offers daily and weekly events, rewarding users with prizes for completing specific tasks.
Gameplay here offers a noteworthy difference for the match-three genre, as players can swap fruit diagonally, as well as horizontally and vertically, to create matches. Players earn up to three stars on each stage, depending on their high score. When gamers fail to complete a stage, they lose a life, which recharges automatically over time.
As a free-to-play experience, Ice Age Avalanche is monetized via this lives system, as players can purchase additional lives instantly. In addition, as players progress, they unlock various power-ups which can be purchased between stages.
In a statement, Gonzague de Vallois, senior vice president of publishing at Gameloft, commented on the game:
Another sensational hit is about to enter the gaming market. We’re very excited to offer the new match-three puzzle game, Ice Age Avalanche, to the public with a whole new level of game play and stunning graphics for a true Ice Age experience.
Ice Age Avalanche is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store, Google Play, Windows 8 and Windows Phone.
