It’s no April Fools’ joke — DeNA and Marvel Entertainment have announced the release of Marvel Mighty Heroes on iOS and Android devices. First announced in February, the brawler allows gamers to collect a team of famous Marvel superheroes (and villains), from Captain America and Spider-Man to Hawkeye, Gamora and more, taking them into battles to save the world.
Each character is equipped with its own upgradable skills, and comes with alternate costumes which unlock new powers. During gameplay, players tap on the ground to move, tap on enemies to target and automatically attack, and tap on buttons on the right side of the screen in order to use skills. These abilities take a few seconds to recharge before they can be used again.
Players can have a team of three heroes active at any one time, and can swap between active characters during missions by tapping on character pictures on the left side of the screen. Even if a team member isn’t active during the battle, they still receive experience points which level them up and increase their base stats.
Each mission sees players joining a team of up to three other real users from around the world. These missions may see players defending key points on a map, or defeating large bosses (as examples), with the game’s first limited time event also taking place at launch. Regular updates will be added to the game going forward, introducing \"all-new worlds and storylines never before explored in a Marvel game.\"
Missions require energy to complete, which recharges automatically over time, or can be purchased with real money. Gamers can also purchase new heroes from the store, with a free recruit available once every 24 hours.
In a statement, Barry Dorf, vice president of partnerships and alliances at DeNA, commented on the game:
Marvel Mighty Heroes starts with old-school superhero gameplay from the glory days of playing alongside friends at the arcade, and adds a modern twist for mobile devices through intuitive touch controls and global cooperative gameplay. Marvel fans of all ages will love the timeless characters and evolving Marvel storylines based on classic plots and new story arcs.
Marvel Mighty Heroes is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store and Google Play.
