JumpStart, which focuses on learning-based games for kids, has announced the release of the first major content expansion for School of Dragons, the MMO based on DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon franchise. The expansion is called Icestorm Island, and it takes players to a new arctic world, challenging them to complete 50 quests alongside a new baby dragon.
In Icestorm Island, players are introduced to Groncicle, a baby dragon exclusive to the expansion pack. Groncicle is struggling to survive in the world of Berk, so players must travel through Icestorm Island to find the Groncicle a home. Players will explore ancient ruins and arctic caves, with gameplay focused on educational concepts in the areas of life, earth and physical sciences. Users will also encounter new gameplay built around engineering technology. In all, the expansion covers 20 Next Generation Scientific Standards through these quests and an expanded Field Guide.
In a statement, David Jaloza, producer of School of Dragons, commented on the expansion:
As expansion packs become increasingly popular with fans of deep MMO style games, our team is responding with Icestorm Island, which serves up a seamless integration of learning-based content with compelling story lines. It’s teaching kids core science concepts as they explore the arctic with their favorite DreamWorks dragon characters.
School of Dragons has been played by over 16 million people since its launch in late 2013. The game began on Facebook and browser, but has since expanded to mobile devices.
The Icestorm Island expansion is available for free to players with active membership packages, or can be purchased for $15 by non-members. School of Dragons is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore. The game is also available to play for free on the Web.
