Pinterest is a visual social network, so the former head of image search at Google would seem to be an ideal fit as its new head of engineering.
Li Fan is indeed Pinterest's new head of engineering, the company announced Tuesday, saying that she will lead its engineering team, which is responsible for scaling and ranking some 75 billion pins, as well as projects including object detection, visual search, camera search, buyable pins, multi-item cart checkout and video.
Prior to her most recent role as Google's head of image search, Fan spent eight years at its Google+ social network, managing ads and search infrastructure. She also served as vice president of search at Chinese search engine Baidu.
Pinterest CEO Ben Silbermann said in an email to SocialTimes:
We're building the technology to help millions of people discover everyday ideas. Li's expertise in large-scale image-search technology and engineering leadership will be key as we continue developing a comprehensive recommendations engine for people around the world.
